A Real Knee Rehabilitation Journey

Recovering from surgery is rarely straightforward. Whether an injury is caused by sport or everyday wear and tear, the quality and timing of physiotherapy often determines the long term outcome.

A recent 5 Star Google review from one of our patients highlights what structured, clinically led physiotherapy looks like in practice and why both pre and post operative rehabilitation matter.

From Injury to Diagnosis
The patient first attended the clinic in autumn 2024 after sustaining a knee injury while playing rugby. At the initial appointment, the knee was too swollen to assess safely. Early treatment focused on reducing swelling and restoring movement, rather than rushing into a diagnosis that could have been inaccurate.

Once the swelling settled, assessment raised concerns about ligament damage. A referral to a consultant and an MRI scan confirmed tears to the ACL and meniscus.

Managing the Injury Before Surgery
Due to personal circumstances, surgery could not take place immediately. Instead of leaving the knee unsupported, physiotherapy focused on managing symptoms, maintaining strength and stability, and protecting the joint. This allowed the patient to return to a level of activity he was comfortable with while awaiting surgery.

This phase is often underestimated. Pre operative physiotherapy plays a significant role in preventing further deterioration and improving outcomes after surgery.

Post Operative Rehabilitation
Surgery took place in summer 2025, followed by a structured six month rehabilitation programme. Early stages involved weekly sessions to restore movement, rebuild strength and protect the surgical repair. As recovery progressed, sessions became less frequent and independence increased.

By the end of the programme, the patient was discharged feeling confident and capable, comfortably returning to activities including weightlifting, cycling and hiking.

The Patient’s Review
“My first visit to James at Physio Elite was in the autumn of 2024 after a knee injury sustained playing rugby. At the time of my initial visit my knee was too swollen to assess so we spent a few sessions working on getting the swelling down. Once the injury could be assessed James was worried that I had ligament damage, so recommended I see a consultant and get an MRI scan.

The scan confirmed I had torn my ACL and meniscus. Due to personal circumstances I could not have the required surgery instantly so I worked with James to manage the injury. This allowed me to return to a lifestyle I was happy with whilst waiting for surgery.

After surgery in summer 2025 and a six month rehab plan, I am now discharged and comfortable doing many things with my knee including weightlifting, cycling and hiking. The support received throughout this entire process has been amazing and I could not have asked for more.”

Key Lessons From This Case
This rehabilitation journey reinforces several important principles:

• Early assessment and swelling management matter
• Pre operative physiotherapy improves surgical outcomes
• Rehabilitation should adapt to the individual, not follow a generic timeline
• Discharge should mean confidence and capability, not just reduced pain

Thinking About Surgery or Rehab?
If you are preparing for knee or other surgery, recovering from an operation, or managing a long standing injury, the right physiotherapy plan can make the difference between simply coping and fully recovering.
