Surgery can be an important milestone in recovery, but it is rarely the end of the journey.
For many patients, physiotherapy is the bridge between a successful operation and getting back to the activities they enjoy. Whilst surgery may address part of the problem, rehabilitation is often essential for restoring movement, improving strength and rebuilding confidence.
Recently, one of our patients kindly left the following 5 Star Google Review after undergoing rehabilitation for a complex, longstanding spinal condition.
Patient Review
“James is a very experienced physio, who will give an honest prognosis and use modern treatment techniques with bespoke exercise advice. He has helped me rehab after back surgery and improve chronic arthritic and muscular damage. He has a professional and caring approach and also understands the role of stress in chronic physical conditions. I would recommend him to anyone needing help with acute or chronic muscular or joint pain.”
A Long History of Back Problems
This patient had been living with back problems for more than a decade. Over the years, he had undergone numerous interventions including guided nerve root injections, facet joint ablation procedures and eventually spinal surgery. Whilst some treatments provided temporary relief, the underlying biomechanical issues remained.
Unfortunately, complications following surgery, including a dural tear, created an even more challenging rehabilitation process.
As is often the case with longstanding musculoskeletal conditions, there was no single treatment that provided the answer. Instead, the focus was on understanding the whole picture and developing a rehabilitation programme tailored specifically to the patient’s needs, goals and presentation.
A Multi Faceted Rehabilitation Approach
Treatment involved a combination of therapies designed to improve movement, function and overall quality of life.
These included:
Bespoke exercise therapy
Balance and proprioceptive training
Radial Shockwave Therapy
High Powered Laser Therapy
Education and self management strategies
The aim was not simply to reduce pain, but to improve function, increase confidence and help the patient return to a more active lifestyle.
Why Individualised Rehabilitation Matters
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding chronic pain is that there is always a quick fix.
In reality, long term conditions often require a carefully structured and progressive approach. Whether symptoms stem from arthritis, previous injury, surgery or a combination of factors, successful rehabilitation is rarely about one treatment alone.
Equally important is recognising that stress, sleep quality, physical health and lifestyle factors can all influence how we experience pain and recovery.
By addressing these factors alongside physical rehabilitation, patients are often able to make meaningful improvements even when symptoms have been present for many years.
Have You Run Out of Options?
Many people living with chronic pain assume that if previous treatments have not worked, there is little else that can be done. Our experience suggests otherwise. We regularly help patients with complex and longstanding musculoskeletal conditions, including those who have previously tried multiple treatment approaches or undergone surgery.
The first step is obtaining an accurate assessment and understanding exactly what factors may be contributing to your symptoms.
