 Exercises for arthritic clients

Generally low load exercise such as swimming, aquafit, walking, Pilates and Tai chi can be really useful in controlling pain for patients with arthritis.

The clinic provides a service where we meet the patient at a pool of their choice or, if they have no access, to our local pool at David Lloyd. I then teach a series of empowering Pain Management Exercises that are tailored to each patient’s specific needs. These exercises give the patient an ongoing set of tools to be used to control their pain. I’ve found that water is one of the best environments for both stretching and strengthening muscles, particularly for conditions like arthritis. Combining these exercises with other therapeutic practices, like Pilates or Tai Chi, can often enhance their effectiveness.
