Shoulder pain is one of the most common problems we see in the clinic. It can develop gradually and often starts to affect everyday activities such as sleeping, reaching overhead, exercising, or lifting objects.
Many people try to manage it themselves at first. Sometimes that works, but in other cases the pain lingers for months and becomes increasingly frustrating.
Recently, one of our patients shared their experience after receiving treatment at the clinic.
A Patient’s Experience
Here is what they said in their recent 5 star Google review:
“I came to see James as I was having constant shoulder pain and had never been to a physio before, so I did not know what to expect. I have been blown away by the results. I originally booked six sessions but only needed five as I was pain free. I would definitely recommend.”
It is always rewarding for us to see patients return to normal activities without pain.
What Causes Persistent Shoulder Pain?
Shoulder pain can occur for a number of reasons, but a very common cause is irritation or degeneration of the tendons around the shoulder. These tendons help control movement and stabilise the joint.
When they become overloaded or irritated, patients may notice:
• pain when lifting the arm
• discomfort when sleeping on the affected side
• weakness or stiffness in the shoulder
• pain during sport or exercise
In some cases the symptoms settle with rest and exercise, but sometimes additional treatment can help stimulate recovery.
How Shockwave Therapy Can Help
Shockwave therapy is a treatment that uses targeted acoustic waves delivered into the injured tissue.
These waves help stimulate the body’s natural healing response and can improve blood flow to the affected area. For some tendon related problems this can help reduce pain and improve function.
Shockwave therapy is commonly used for conditions such as:
• rotator cuff related shoulder pain
• tennis elbow
• Achilles tendon pain
• plantar fasciitis
• persistent tendon injuries
Treatment is usually delivered over a series of sessions alongside rehabilitation exercises tailored to the individual.
When Should You Seek Help for Shoulder Pain?
If shoulder pain has been present for several weeks or is starting to interfere with sleep, work or exercise, it can be helpful to have it properly assessed.
A physiotherapist can determine the underlying cause and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.
In some cases that may involve exercise based rehabilitation, manual therapy, or treatments such as shockwave therapy.
