How Your Shoes Affect Your Knees, Hips and Back

Footwear is one of the most underestimated contributors to ongoing joint and back pain. Shoes do not just protect your feet. They influence how force travels through your ankles, knees, hips and spine with every step.

Your feet form the base of your posture. When shoes are supportive and well structured, the foot strikes the ground cleanly and load is shared efficiently through the leg. When footwear is worn out, overly soft or allows the foot to collapse inwards, the knees and hips are forced to compensate. Over time this increases strain through the lower back and contributes to the stiffness and irritation many people simply put up with.

Insoles can play a valuable role when used correctly. While off the shelf options help some people, a tailored approach is far more reliable. The right insole supports the natural arch, improves alignment and guides movement so load is distributed evenly. Poorly chosen insoles can worsen the problem by reinforcing faulty mechanics rather than correcting them.

Well chosen footwear and insoles should provide
• A firm, stable heel
• Support that matches your natural arch
• A structured sole that guides your stride
• A secure fit without slipping or rolling
• Control and stability rather than excessive cushioning

At Physioelite, we assess footwear, analyse gait and advise on whether insoles are appropriate. For more complex cases such as long standing pain or significant biomechanical imbalance, we work closely with MH Sports Podiatry in Bristol to ensure patients receive specialist assessment and custom solutions where needed. This combined physiotherapy and podiatry approach is often the turning point when simpler interventions have failed.
