What is Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is a therapeutic practice that uses water to aid in rehabilitation, pain relief, and overall well-being. It involves exercises performed in warm water, which helps to relax muscles, reduce stress on joints, and promote healing. This form of therapy is often used in physiotherapy to enhance mobility, strength, and recovery.
How Does Hydrotherapy Work?
Hydrotherapy works by utilising the buoyancy, resistance, and temperature of water to provide a low-impact environment for movement. The warmth of the water helps to increase blood circulation and relax tight muscles, while the buoyancy reduces weight-bearing stress on joints. Additionally, water resistance allows for gentle strengthening exercises, improving flexibility and coordination without excessive strain on the body. A bespoke exercise plan will be formulated for personal ongoing sessions.
What Conditions Can Hydrotherapy Treat?
Hydrotherapy can be beneficial for a variety of conditions, including:
Arthritis and joint pain
Hydrotherapy reduces joint stress and inflammation, easing pain and improving range of motion for those with arthritis.
Back pain and spinal conditions
The buoyancy of water supports the spine, allowing gentle movement and pain relief for individuals with back issues.
Sports injuries and rehabilitation
Controlled aquatic exercises promote healing, reduce swelling, and help restore strength after sports injuries.

Post-surgical recovery
Hydrotherapy provides a low-impact environment to safely rebuild mobility and function following surgery.
Neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis or stroke recovery
Warm water therapy enhances muscle control, balance, and confidence for individuals with neurological challenges.
Fibromyalgia and chronic pain syndromes
Gentle water-based movements can soothe widespread pain and reduce fatigue in those with chronic pain conditions.

Muscle stiffness and mobility issues
The warmth and resistance of water help relax tight muscles and improve joint flexibility.

Stress and anxiety-related tension
Immersion in warm water promotes relaxation, reduces cortisol levels, and eases both mental and physical tension.

Hydrotherapy Your Questions Answered
Hydrotherapy is a form of therapeutic exercise performed in a warm water pool. It uses the properties of water—such as buoyancy, resistance, and heat—to support movement, reduce pain, and improve strength, flexibility, and function.
Hydrotherapy is effective for a wide range of conditions, including arthritis, back pain, post-surgical recovery (e.g. joint replacements), sports injuries, neurological conditions (like stroke or MS), chronic pain, and general mobility issues.
Most people can benefit from hydrotherapy, but it may not be suitable if you have open wounds, infections, certain heart conditions, or uncontrolled seizures. A physiotherapist will assess your individual suitability before starting treatment.
No. Hydrotherapy exercises are done in a shallow, warm pool under supervision. You do not need to be able to swim to participate.
Bring swimwear, a towel, any prescribed braces or supports, and water shoes (if preferred for grip). Some clinics also require a medical clearance form if you have certain health conditions.
Hydrotherapy is a structured, goal-oriented treatment guided by a physiotherapist. Unlike swimming, the exercises are tailored to your condition and focus on rehabilitation, not fitness or sport.
