Tennis elbow, also known as common extensor tendinopathy. This is an inflammation of the tendon that attaches into the structure called the radial head which is the outside of the elbow joint.
The condition is often caused by overload. The classic example would be heavy loading with a straight arm such as using hedge trimmers, where the tendon becomes inflamed, and the patient finds it difficult to load the wrist joint.
Once the condition is diagnosed, if it has been present for under 3 months, conventional physiotherapy is often the best approach. Manual therapy, graduated loading, taping and electrotherapies such as interferential electrotherapy are effective. All these modalities help to reduce the inflammatory process. Common course of treatment is 4-6 sessions.
If the condition has been present for longer than 3 months, then Radial Shockwave is a better solution. Again, the course of treatment tends to be 4-6 sessions with graduated loading.
Another cause of tennis elbow is when the neck or shoulder on the same side is damaged, which can then increase the load through the elbow joint. Unfortunately, this is a condition that very rarely fixes itself because the tendon has a poor blood supply. Solving Your Tennis Elbow often requires a targeted approach, with physiotherapy being a key treatment. Physiotherapy helps heal the tendon, allowing the patient to exercise and strengthen the tendon appropriately, improving both strength and flexibility over time.
