Hydrotherapy exercises can be an excellent way to improve movement, strength and confidence, particularly when land based exercises feel uncomfortable or difficult.
Some of our patients request hydrotherapy sessions with us either at the local David Lloyd pool or independently at a pool of their choice, where we provide a bespoke programme tailored to their individual needs.
Exercising in water offers several unique benefits. The natural buoyancy of the water helps reduce pressure through the joints, which can make movements feel easier and more comfortable. This is particularly helpful for people dealing with:
- post operative
- arthritis
- hip or knee pain
- lower back pain
- post operative rehabilitation
- balance or mobility issues
- tendon or joint related pain
The warmth of the water can also help relax muscles and reduce stiffness, while the resistance created by the water allows muscles to work safely without placing excessive strain on the body.
Another major benefit of hydrotherapy is confidence. Many patients find they are able to move more freely in the pool compared to on land, which can help improve strength, balance and overall mobility over time.
As an example here is a list of some lower body hydrotherapy exercises I would prescribe which includes exercises such as:
- high knee walking
- tandem balance walking
- supine cycling
- standing hip mobility exercises
