One of the things we enjoy most about physiotherapy is that no two patients are ever the same.
Even when two people arrive with similar symptoms, the underlying cause can be completely different. This is why a thorough physiotherapy assessment is so important. Rather than simply treating the area that hurts, our aim is to identify the root cause of the problem and develop a treatment plan that is specific to each individual.
The last few weeks in clinic provided three excellent examples of why an accurate diagnosis matters.
Patient One: Back Pain… or Something More?
A gentleman attended the clinic with ongoing lower back pain, together with bladder symptoms and mild erectile dysfunction.
At first glance these may seem like completely separate issues, but the body rarely works in isolation. Following a comprehensive assessment, it became clear that his musculoskeletal problems and men’s health symptoms were closely linked, allowing us to create a treatment plan that addressed both conditions simultaneously.
His rehabilitation combined physiotherapy for his back with focused shockwave therapy as part of his men’s health treatment programme.
The outcome was extremely positive. His back pain improved significantly and his erectile dysfunction resolved, demonstrating how treating the whole person, rather than focusing on a single symptom, can sometimes achieve far better results.
It is also a reminder that men’s health and musculoskeletal physiotherapy often overlap much more than many people realise.
Patient Two: It Wasn’t Trigger Finger
Our second patient arrived convinced he had trigger finger after injuring his little finger during a rugby match last year.
However, careful assessment of the finger movement, tendon function and mechanism of injury revealed that this was not trigger finger at all. Instead, the problem was a traumatic flexor tendon injury that had left the tendon shortened and irritated, without the locking or catching that is characteristic of true trigger finger.
Treatment included instrument assisted soft tissue mobilisation, tendon specific exercises and a planned course of radial shockwave therapy. We expect him to regain full function within four to five treatment sessions.
This case highlights an important point. Even when symptoms appear obvious, the correct diagnosis is essential if the most appropriate treatment is to be provided.
Patient Three: “I’ve Pulled My Hamstring”
The third patient developed pain after completing a fast treadmill running session and believed he had strained his hamstring.
In reality, the hamstring was not the primary source of the problem.
Our assessment identified weakness in the muscles responsible for stabilising the hip, reduced single leg balance and control, irritation of the piriformis muscle and tightness around the hip and thigh.
Rather than simply treating the painful area, our rehabilitation programme focused on improving hip stability, restoring muscle strength and reducing irritation of the surrounding tissues. With a structured programme of treatment and exercise, we expect him to return to full activity within three to four sessions.
The Common Theme
Although these three patients presented with very different symptoms, they all had one thing in common.
The initial assumption about what was causing the problem was not the final diagnosis.
Whether it is back pain, a hand injury, sports related pain or a more complex condition, symptoms only tell part of the story. A thorough physiotherapy assessment helps identify the underlying cause, allowing treatment to be directed where it is needed most.
At Physioelite, we believe that successful rehabilitation starts with asking the right questions, carrying out a detailed assessment and creating a treatment plan that is tailored to the individual. It is this approach that helps our patients recover efficiently, regain confidence and return to doing the activities they enjoy.
If you have been struggling with pain, an injury or symptoms that just don’t seem to be improving, don’t assume you know the cause. Sometimes the biggest step towards recovery is getting the right diagnosis in the first place.
